  1. Comics! For Windows
  2. -------------------
  3.  
  4. A newer version of COMW1.ZIP (2.37) was uploaded on 7/22/92,
  5. and this version should be used rather than the older one (this
  6. version fixed a couple of minor problems, and it also has more
  7. capabilities included, including on-line help).  If you had
  8. downloaded a previous version, note that the installation
  9. instructions for COMW1.ZIP have an additional step that they
  10. did not have before.
  11.  
  12. Demonstration Version Information
  13. ---------------------------------
  14.  
  15. Comics! For Windows is a comic book database maintenance program
  16. that runs under Windows 3.n in standard or enhanced mode.  Because
  17. of the size of the download files, this file is provided separately
  18. so that you can decide whether you would like to download the full
  19. demonstration version.  A detailed feature list describing many
  20. of the capabilities of the Comics! software is at the end of this
  21. file.
  22.  
  23. The third file in the Comics! set contains, among other things,
  24. VBRUN100.DLL.  If you already have this file in your Windows or
  25. Windows System directory (if you have Visual Basic, or if you've
  26. run other Visual Basic applications), you can download COMW4.ZIP
  27. rather than COMW3.ZIP.  COMW4.ZIP is a smaller file because
  28. it does not contain VBRUN100.DLL.  It is installed in place of
  29. COMW3.ZIP in the following procedure.

  31. Installation of the Demo Version
  32. --------------------------------
  33.  
  34. The full version of Comics! contains a setup program which
  35. automatically installs the Comics! system.  The demonstration
  36. version must be "manually" installed, however, and this consists
  37. of several steps, as detailed below.
  38.  
  39. The demonstration version is in three parts.  Each of these parts
  40. is a zipped set of files which belongs in a specific directory.
  41. The first contains the Comics! program and INI file.  After it
  42. is downloaded, create a directory for the Comics! program, for
  43. example, C:\COMICS!.  Copy the COMW1.ZIP file to this new directory,
  44. and enter PKUNZIP COMW1 to extract the executable and INI file.
  45. The COMW1.ZIP file can then be deleted.
  46.  
  47. The file GRID.VBX which is contained in COMW1.ZIP must be
  48. placed in the Windows system directory, so copy that file to the
  49. Windows system directory (often C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) and then
  50. delete the version in the current directory.
  51.  
  52. The second file, COMW2.ZIP, contains the database.  Again, create
  53. a directory for the database (the same directory as is used for the
  54. programs is fine), such as C:\COMICS!\DATABASE.  Copy the COMW2.ZIP
  55. file to this new directory, and enter PKUNZIP COMW2 to extract the
  56. database files (there are quite a few). The COMW2.ZIP file can
  57. then be deleted.
  58.  
  59. The last file contains several Windows subroutines in DLL and VBX
  60. format.  These must be placed in the Windows system directory, which
  61. is often C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.  Copy the COMW3.ZIP file to the
  62. Windows system directory, and then unzip it to create the files.
  63. If any of these already exist in your Windows system directory, you
  64. should choose to not create a new version.  After expanding, the
  65. COMW3.ZIP file can be deleted as well.
  66.  
  67. A line must be added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS system file.
  68. Within Windows, select File Run and enter SYSEDIT to start the system
  69. files editor.  Click on the AUTOEXEC.BAT window.  At the end of
  70. the file, but before any lines which start WINdows, enter a new
  71. line which reads

  73.     SHARE
  74.  
  75. (if it is not already there).  Click on File and Save to save the
  76. files, and leave SYSEDIT.  YOU MUST NOW RESTART YOUR COMPUTER and
  77. Windows before running Comics!.  The SHARE program can alternatively
  78. be installed in the CONFIG.SYS file -- consult DOS documentation
  79. for the proper syntax.

  81. You are now ready to run Comics!.  From Windows Program Manager or
  82. Norton Desktop, select File Run from the menus and enter
  83. C:\COMICS!\COMICS! (or whatever directory you chose to install
  84. the program in).  The first time the program is run, you will
  85. be prompted for the location of the program and of the database.
  86. Enter the directory names which were created in the first two
  87. steps above.  The first time the program is run, it also adds
  88. two lines to the WIN.INI file which contain the location of
  89. the Comics! program, and possibly up to five lines which contain
  90. Paradox Engine parameters.  All of these can be removed if it is
  91. decided that Comics! is not suitable for your purposes.

  93. If you have problems performing the above, please call the number
  94. given below for assistance.  If any portion of the installation or
  95. software does not work, please contact me immediately so that I
  96. can get the demonstration version fixed and a copy on diskette to
  97. the person reporting the problem.

  99. A Couple Of Less Than Obvious Features
  100. --------------------------------------
  101.  
  102. The magnifying glass icon is used to enter details about codes,
  103. and it corresponds to the options on the Detail menu.  To use it,
  104. click on hold over the magnifying glass.  Then drag (move while
  105. holding down the left mouse button) the smaller magnifying glass
  106. over the box containing a code, such as the title.  Release the
  107. button (dropping the icon) to display the detail entry window.
  108.  
  109. The book icons are used to enter more than two creators or more
  110. than one character for a comic book.  Click on the book to display
  111. the corresponding entry window.  The book will appear open if
  112. there are more entries than can be displayed on the main window.
  113.  
  114. Click on the folder icons to add detailed notes to a comic.  This
  115. action displays a window in which up to a 255 character comment
  116. can be added.  If there is a comment associated with the comic,
  117. the folder will be displayed open rather than closed.
  118.  
  119. Always leave at least two comics in the database.  Comics! does
  120. not support zero or one comic -- change the demonstration comics
  121. included in the database rather than removing them all.
  122.  
  123. There are numerous options and features of the system which are
  124. described in the user manual available in the full version of
  125. Comics!, including descriptions of preferences and the other
  126. windows and controls.

  128. System Requirements
  129. -------------------

  131. To run Comics!, you must have an IBM or compatible running Windows
  132. 3.n in standard or enhanced mode, a pointing device, and approximately
  133. 3.5 MB on your hard drive.  The demonstration version requires
  134. approximately 2 MB of disk space.  A 16 MHz or faster computer is
  135. strongly recommended.

  180.     the condition, sources, or publishers of your collection.  Print
  181.     the graph with a click of the mouse.  (Not included in demo version.)
